About the Author/Artist

Deanna Lally is a traditional artist, whose artwork has been displayed in galleries in Sedona, AZ, Denver, CO, San Francisco, CA, and also showcased in a book celebrating the National Parks, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, and Yosemite. She's also an animal portrait artist, whose commissioned paintings in acrylic and oil, and drawings in graphite and colored pencil, hang in the homes of pet lovers across the United States and Canada.

As an author, Deanna has previously been published by Western Horseman Books. Her favorite of these non-fiction publications, "The Art of Hackamore Training," she wrote as a contracted writer in 2011.

"I knew I had one chance to sell my abilities to the gentlemen who were seeking to hire a writer. They told me they had previously fired other writers who failed to meet their vision. I dove hard into the project, and with thirty hard days in the labor of love, I had written "The Art of Hackamore Training" cover to cover.  I then held my breath as I submitted it and waited for their acceptance or denial...

Thankfully, my manuscript was met with resounding applause, from both Dunning and Guitron, and Western Horseman editors. It was a milestone for me, as well as a dream come true--I had chosen a date by which I wanted to be a published author...and by God's grace, a little luck, and unyielding perseverance, I made that deadline! Dream number-one, accomplished!"

Deanna's vision for her children's books comes from everyday life. On the home property she calls, "They Houndstead," eight beloved bloodhounds create nonstop laughter. They are the inspiration for every illustration. "The Things My Nose Knows," is written about her real-life buddy, Doss, with his mom, Scarlett, and dad, Boone, having cameos in the story.

"The Things My Nose Knows was written when Doss was a little chubby, baggy-skinned puppy. He was just learning to perform in the sport of mantrailing--to search for lost people--just like his parents. He was often getting into mischief because of that nose of his! But other times, he'd use his nose to find the person he was told to find, and it was pure magic! As I watched his immature puppy stage of learning alongside the efficient professionalism of his parents, the story just came to life in my head!

Deanna has additional children's books already in the works... The studio is busy, no brushes allowed to dry. There are more hours and months of painting yet to be done, but she's excited to share the next stories with you and your loved ones.

DL Bloodhounds

Deanna's bloodhounds are MANTRAILERS, meaning they are scent-discriminate search dogs. Working off of a scent-article, they will search diligently to find a missing person, ignoring all other human scent, focusing only on that person's scent in the environment! Bloodhounds have the most olfactory receptors (scent receptors) in their noses of any domestic canine. That's why they are the top scent-work specialists of the dog-industry. Having more olfactory receptors allows bloodhounds to detect scent even after heavy storms, wind, rain, snow, traffic contamination, etc., where dog breeds with less olfactory receptors tend to struggle. They are described as having a "cold nose," meaning they can find and follow the trail long after it's "gone too cold," for other dog breeds to follow.
